A PCR method for detection of bifidobacteria in raw milk and raw milk cheese: comparison with culture-based methods.

Bifidobacteria are well known for their beneficial effects on health and are used as probiotics in food and pharmaceutical products. As they form one of the most important groups in both human and animal feces, their use as fecal indicator organisms in raw milk products has recently been proposed. Bifidobacteria species isolated in humans are different from those isolated in animals. It should ...

Detection of Coxiella burnetii by Real-Time PCR in Raw Milk and Traditional Cheese Distributed in Tehran Province

Coxiella burnetii is common causative agent of Q fever in humans and animals. Although the main route of human infection is through inhalation of contaminated aerosols (dust), but oral transmission through contaminated raw milk and dairy products are also possible routes of infection. The aim of this study was to identify and determine the extent of contamination and prevalence of Coxiella burn...

Molecular approaches to analysing the microbial composition of raw milk and raw milk cheese.

The availability and application of culture-independent tools that enable a detailed investigation of the microbiota and microbial biodiversity of food systems has had a major impact on food microbiology. This review focuses on the application of DNA-based technologies, such as denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE), single stran...

Comparison of methods for isolating Campylobacter jejuni from raw milk.

The method of Doyle and Roman (Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 43:1343-1353, 1982) was compared with that of Lovett et al. (Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 46:459-462, 1983) for the ability to recover Campylobacter jejuni strains inoculated into raw milk at a concentration of less than 1 cell per g. The method of Lovett et al. gave significantly greater recovery proportions.

Semi-Quantitative Method for Streptococci Magnetic Detection in Raw Milk

Bovine mastitis is the most costly disease for dairy farmers and the most frequent reason for the use of antibiotics in dairy cattle; thus, control measures to detect and prevent mastitis are crucial for dairy farm sustainability. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a sensitive method to magnetically detect Streptococcus agalactiae (a Group B streptococci) and Streptococcus uberis...
